Chad Rad's concert picks July 23-25

Posted by Chad Radford on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 12:53 PM

Variety Playhouse.
1099 Euclid Ave. 404-524-7354.

Sun., July 25 — Most Americans know Seu Jorge as the deep Brazilian voice behind the folky covers of David Bowie songs that appeared in Wes Anderson’s 2004 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. But over the years, Jorge has honed his presence to reach stages the world over. Jorge plays in support of his latest album, a band effort with fellow Brazilians Almaz, which finds the group exploring dark, psychedelic samba weighed against flourishes of uplifting rock ’n’ roll melodies and reverb.$25-$30. 8 p.m.

529
529 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-228-6769.
Fri., July 23Fletcher C. Johnson (of The Weight and King Tuff), Tom Cheshire, Black Spring Break. $5. 9 p.m.
Sat., July 24London Is Dead is the clever name for a gloomy tribute to the ’80s goth-pop sounds of the Smiths and the Cure. Athens lads Big Mouth play the part of Morrissey and the boys, while Atlanta’s Small Reactions channel the happy/sad songs of Robert Smith and Co. Local songwriting fixtures Tom Cheshire of All Night Drug Prowling Wolves and Jeffrey Bützer (the Bicycle Eaters) are performing a few related cover songs as well, but what they have up their sleeves is a secret until show time. $7. 9 p.m.

The Earl
488 Flat Shoals Rd. 404-522-3950.
Fri., July 23Noot d' Noot bounces back from last year's Cash For Gold LP with something that's not quite straight-up funk, but close to it. From Ever Since sheds the group's cosmic improv tendencies to harness the chemistry of its live performances, minus the drawn-out jams. Experimentation takes a backseat in such songs as "Balm Yard," "Light As a Feather" and "Jack Move," which border on redundancy with their smooth but indistinguishable rhythms and saxophone interplay. Six songs deep, "Know That Feelin'" and "Super Double Buzz" kick it up a notch with a spray of staccato electro-funk and Afrobeat. If anything, From Ever Since demonstrates that the band doesn't need off-the-cuff antics to keep the party going. When stripped to their essential parts, Noot songs are funky as hell. Judi Chicago and DJ Gnosis open. $9. 8 p.m.

Sat., July 24Soulphonics & Ruby Velle, Weapons of Audio. $8. 9 p.m.
Sun., July 25Dan Sartain, the Booze, Howlies. $8. 8 p.m.

The Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge.
644 North Highland Ave. 404-874-5756.
Fri., July 23 — Winston-Salem, N.C., duo Jews and Catholics pits singer/guitarist Eddie Garcia and bass player Alanna Meltzer against the staccato plod of a drum machine, turning out mechanical art-rock that hangs in a balance of noisy agitation and fiery songwriting. There's too much grit in their songs to label them goth, and too much experimentation to tag them as cut-and-dry punk or pop; rather, they fall somewhere in between. Rabbit and Spirits & the Melchizedek Children open. $5. 8:30 p.m.

Apache Café.
64 Third St. 404-876-5436.
