Atlanta Indie Fest is still a work in progress

ATL Indie Fest from Benjamin Styles on Vimeo.

Indie Fest founders and Mach 5 members, Corey Davis and A. Ware had the best of intentions in recharging the Indie Fest, but this year, they paved a hellish path in choice of venue. The show took place at 10 Krog, the multi-use entertainment venue and art gallery, which seemed ideal on the surface, until you reached the main area. Patrons crowded into a room with a sign that said “Keep Door Closed.” Why? To ensure that at least one person be hospitalized for heatstroke. The $1 water and Red Bulls, fortunately, kept anyone from passing out.

By nightfall when the temps cooled a bit, the show was forced to end early. A fight broke out from the center of the room — shocking for an event where there was not as much as a shove, even in oppressive heat. The only security present was a woman with a black tank top/cutoff tee with ‘SECURITY’ in block letters, which I thought was a novelty. By the time Donnis got on stage, everyone was asked to leave.

All was not a total loss. To that end, I present the Indie Fest Superlatives:

Best costumes
Sophe Nix

Best rapid-fire flow

Tom P

Best performance while bathed in sweat

Jay West

Best performance without breaking a sweat
Joy Tolentino

Best pure ATL style flow

Grip Plyaz

Best ATL flow with retro-but-future funk and vocals on some spaced out shit
Hollyweerd
