Many moons ago I had a chance to catch Drive Like Jehu play a show in San Diego, and for years I stood by it as being pretty close to one of the greatest shows that I had ever seen. In August of 2002 singer and guitarist Rick Froberg came to play the Earl with Hot Snakes, and again, put on what was pretty close to one of the greatest shows I have ever seen.

Tonight (Thurs., Jan. 11) Froberg is coming back to Atlanta with Obits, previewing songs from their forthcoming second album, Moody, Standard and Poor (Sub Pop). These days the songs are still pretty intense, but they have more in common with the power-pop hooks of the old-school J. Geils Band records than the searing noise and dissonance of Hot Snakes or Drive Like Jehu. But a man can't go on screaming his guts out forever, and Froberg and Co. are gracefully settling into their post-youth years with bold melodies and stripped-down rock 'n' roll rhythms. You probably don't want to skip this one...

Wizard Smoke and Barreracudas open. $10. 9 p.m. 529, 529 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-228-6769.
