Cloudeater's CE_EP1 has kind of a '96 vibe

Purveyors of sultry post-trip-hop, Cloudeater released a couple of new songs on their Band Camp page this week, called “Hardly Wait” and “Wander” (aka CE_EP1). While there’s no denying that there is some serious talent on display here, “Hardly Wait” is filled with sensual techno-driven alt. rock melodies that are reminiscent of late ’90s leftovers from the commercial radio industrial files of Stabbing Westward, Gravity Kills, Filter and so on. OK, Cloudeater’s sound is slightly more reserved than that, but it definitely has a 1996 vibe going on. “Hardly Wait” teeters between equal parts menace and melancholy while conjuring the same breezy, tight T-shirt sentiments of said references.

“Wander” is a more robust song, but it suffers from lyrics that are a bit too literal, which doesn’t leave much room for the imagination to go to work. Vocalist Sam Dew does have an interestingly distressed Stevie Wonder-esque wail that reveals itself a little more here, but it’s not enough to save the song from that super-loud mastering job that seems to be overcompensating for something. But then again, there’s still some potential here since it’s difficult to get a complete picture of a band’s capabilities based on two songs. Stay tuned for more.
