From Exile's NIN EP has finally arrived

Just Like You Imagined by From Exile

Since June of 2009 there has been much talk about the perpetually forthcoming Nine Inch Nails covers EP from blackened and prog. metal masters From Exile, and now it has finally arrived. Just Like You Imagined re-envisions four NIN tunes, “The Great Below,” “Ruiner,” “Sin” and “A Warm Place” (feat. Emil Werstler of Daath), with a bold but respectful makeover that says as much about From Exile’s influences as it does about group’s fiery new direction. “I chose NIN because they were a huge influence on me, but also I felt like since From Exile was in a state of flux and changing its sound, we needed to make a strong statement about where we were headed and what our sound could bring out of these songs,” says guitarist/vocalist Eric Guenther.

Despite the title being Just Like You Imagined, the NIN song of the same name is nowhere to be found here. “It’s my favorite NIN track ever, but I knew that there was no point in us touching it,” Guenther adds. “I didn't want to try to cover it and fail.”

Just Like You Imagined takes some liberties with the songs, and even switches gears on The Fragile’s gloomy endnote, “The Great Below,” by ramping it up with a more dramatic punch, though it’s still a wrist-slitter.

“I'm happy with the degree to which we twisted the songs into something new,” Guenther adds. “They will definitely be recognizable, but hopefully still a bit of a shock. Some NIN fans will probably be pissed, which is cool with me. Maybe that means we did something right.”

Saturday, May 14 w/ Tricil and the Humboldt Trio. $8 (includes CD). 9 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.
