The beautiful people were in full force at Park Tavern last night. Well-heeled (literally), fashion-forward ladies and gents showed up for the one-year anniversary of ATL Live on the Park.
The event was billed as a showcase for Jive recording artists Big Heed & Alien and teen sensation Jawan Harris, but the crowd got some other special surprises.
Harris canceled due to illness and the raucous Big Heed & Alien had a few folks shaking their heads in disbelief as they opened the show with some hard-driving rock chords. The audience found its footing as the odd-couple moved into the catchy “I’m Tipsy,” with Heed and his towering afro walking through the crowd. The rare drummer who's an attraction all by himself, Alien did his requisite drumstick-breaking solo, which continues to catapult his following.
Talk about a shift in energy — after Heed & Alien wrapped host Kenny Burns asked the ladies if they “love a gentleman” before introducing Atlanta native Fonzworth Bentley. Diddy’s bowtie-clad former manservant led a slickly choreographed dance to his lead single “Everybody” from his new EP C.O.L.O.U.R.S.. Bentley told the densely packed patrons that his hiatus from the spotlight was attributed to a tumor the “size of a volleyball” in his stomach. He also mentioned his recent nuptials to actress Faune Chambers Watkins who was in attendance.
Bentley raised the heat and sufficiently warmed up the crowd for the next set, none other than Atlanta R&B crooners Next. They immediately took it back to the ’90s with “Too Close” and “Wifey,” which brought the 30-and-up crowd to its feet. A special appearance from 112’s Q and New Edition’s Ronnie DeVoe made it a full-fledged, old-school reunion.
The sweat drenched trio was the perfect end for a hot, soulful evening.
