Spread Love celebrates DJ Kemit's birthday with guest Pfife of A Tribe Called Quest

It's a birthday celebration for DJ Kemit, and in honor of the occasion, Spread Love welcomes Pfife of A Tribe Called Quest for its "We've Got the Jazz" edition, complete with support from the Atlanta Jazz Fest.

In addition to the keep-you-dancing house and soul music that Kemit provides, the "golden era" of hip-hop where jazz was a constant sample will be in effect, with live performances by Darryl Reeves, Kenny Banks, Kenton Bostick, Kev Choice, Rod Harris, Lyric Jones, Joel Powell, trumpeter Dashill Smith, and surprise guest MCs. You may want to practice dancing while singing, because you'll probably be compelled to do both as songs by Tribe, Digable Planets, Gang Starr, De La Soul and Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth are cued up.

And with Jamal Ahmad hosting — he's always playing a tune on his WCLK-FM (91.9) "The S.O.U.L. of Jazz" show that makes me say, "Oh, that's where that sample came from!" — there's no question that it will be a head-nodding, lovely reminiscent, "awww shit!" type of evening.

Get excited!

The Spread Love link below offers a taste of what you'll hear (like "Swahililand" by Ahmad Jamal mixed right into "Stakes Is High" by De La Soul).

$10-$15. 9 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The Brickyard at 595 North.
