A Girl Among the Dope Boys

Posted By on Tue, Jun 21, 2011 at 11:37 AM

Every Friday night, away from the semi-functioning street lamps lining Ponce de Leon Ave, dozens of youngsters line up outside El Bar's unmarked door, waiting for the next patrons to slip out of the full-capacity room and allow room for a couple more on the dancefloor. It's the Friday Frisk, and resident deejays Cristo Disco and Speakerfoxxx are making sure the crowd is keeping one hand on their dance partner's hip and another in the air, precariously wrapped around a cocktail. Actually, it's not all that different from most Atlanta nightclubs: a smokey room, designer shoe soles slipping through puddles of cranberry-vodkas, and a modern soundtrack dominated by a booming bassline. However, Speakerfoxxx is a girl, and there really just aren't many women behind Atlanta's decks, especially when it comes to hip hop. In last week's music issue, Rodney Carmichael spoke with six local female emcees, discussing their personal journeys through hip hop's underground. Dropping late night floor-fillers to satisfy a 20-something crowd spoon-fed mainstream rap since grammar school might not seem to place Speakerfoxxx in the same arena as the emcees Mr. Carmichael spoke with, but as a female deejay, she does fit in somewhere along the same hip hop spectrum.
Perhaps her debut mixtape is a testament to that. "Dope Boy Anthems", mixed by Speakerfoxxx and J$ol (of the legendary local Rare Form crew), runs through the last decade-plus of Atlanta's home-grown and ever-evolving street hip hop. The mix barely features any female artists, and the lyrical content is definitely not what one would expect to hear when Speakerfoxxx, a slender fashionista with bangs, jumps behind the decks to provide the soundtrack at parties with Southern rap acts like Yelawolf and Rittz. She has promised a "Dope Girl Anthems" follow-up, and her debut mix proves that she's still goin' in, even if the sign says "No Girls Allowed."

"Dope Boy Anthems", mixed by Speakerfoxxx and J$ol, and hosted by Grip Plyaz, is available at local shops Beatlab, Southern Star Tattoo, City of Ink, El Bar, Adidas Originals and from out of Speakerfoxxx's trunk, beginning June 22nd. She was also cool enough to send Creative Loafing a streaming version, hear it and view the tracklist below.
