Four of Atlanta's finest make the trek to Athens

  • Billy Jon Mitchell
  • Carnivores
There are about 70 miles between Atlanta and Athens, but sometimes it feels like a lot more separates their music scenes. The trip takes only slightly over an hour by car, and both cities are constantly churning out great bands—so why the heck isn’t there more cross-pollination?

Maybe the Double Phantom Showcase at the 40 Watt tonight can offer the necessary nudge. Of course, Atlanta bands make the short trek to the UGA-town’s venues and house parties frequently, and vice versa. It’s not like either city has turned off to the other, but really, when was the last time you saw an all-Atlanta bill at an Athens venue that could withstand 400 fans?

Malissa Sole, the head honcho at Fourth Ward Heroes promotions, has organized just that. With the help of Double Phantom’s David Mansfield, Athens will get a full lineup-sized serving of Atlanta’s favorite up-and-coming labels through four of its best bands: Balkans, the Clap, Mood Rings and Carnivores.

Sole said it’s her first proper Fourth Ward Heroes show in Athens, though she’s had a hand in promoting and booking other events. Balkans’ Woody Shortridge, she noted, helped get the rest of the bands on board.

Whether you describe the divide between the Atlanta and Athens scenes as distance or cooperation related—or if you think things are all just hunky dory—there’s something high-five worthy about the tonight’s show.
