Mastodon trailer offers first glimpse inside The Hunter

Here’s a sneak peek at a leaner, meaner Mastodon

?
Last week, Mastodon unveiled artist AJ Fosik’s cover art for its forthcoming album, The Hunter (due out October 2011). It is the group’s first proper album to materialize sans artist Paul Romano’s signature look, but it blends nicely with Mastodon’s long-standing motif. However, all of the baroque symmetry and intense detail of prior albums Crack the Skye, Blood Mountain and beyond has been minimized here to focus on one succinct and very strange image.

This week Mastodon unveiled yet another look at the shape of things to come with an album trailer that shows off an all too brief excerpt from a new song called “Black Tongue.” Even though the video is only about a minute long, and driven by strange, interlocking video game-style graphics, the song wields a pretty straightforward metal grind that seems to reflect the cover art’s M.O. It is, perhaps, the first acclimating look at a leaner, meaner Mastodon as the group continues to hone a sound that carries a much broader appeal than its previous releases.
