Gringo Star gets a little creepy with ‘Shadow’

Last Friday, Gringo Star’s video for the song “Shadow” from the group’s sophomore full-length, Count Yer Lucky Stars, got a push from music blog heavyweight Consequence of Sound.

Though the breezy tune could have just as easily taken a sunshine-filled route for its visual accompaniment Newmerica — the company that brought us the El Myr commercial featuring Brent Hinds of Mastodon — took a different path. Instead, the video capitalizes on the song’s subtle, underlying sense of eeriness when a girl’s slumber is interrupted by a life-sized, balloon-wielding squirrel. While she’s being led out the door the group’s members are lurking in a few dark corners.

The video is a bit of shock when compared to Newmerica’s normal round of funny promotional clips. But its repertoire is much more rounded than that, and though it’s not really a funny video, the playful lights and slow motion scenes bare Newmerica's trademark look and feel. Brooklyn label Gigantic Music is slated to release Count Yer Lucky Stars on Oct. 25. Until then, keep “Shadow” on repeat.
