R.E.M. calls it quits

Athens, Georgie's alternative rock godfathers R.E.M. announced today that the group is calling it quits.

According to a statement on R.E.M. HQ:

To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills have left comments on the site ruminating on their decision. No word from Bill Rieflin, but leaving him out of photos, interviews et. al. has been the group's M.O. since he started playing with them. At least they're going on a high note that crested with 2008's Accelerate, and broke with Collapse Into Now.

Head over to R.E.M. HQ for more.
