Lest we forget, today is the day that the almighty Mastodon unleashes The Hunter, a focused new album that draws strength from the power of bold and uncomplicated riffage. It’s easy to liken songs such as “Curl of the Burl” and “Black Tongue” to the primal rumble of Leviathan, which has become a classic in the group's catalog. But doing so overlooks a compelling trajectory that has carried Mastodon to the outer limits of where metal meets modern pop, all the while never betraying the blackened guitar squalls and staccato rhythms that have pushed the group so far. The raw and unpredictable snarl that the group wielded throughout previous albums, such as Remission and Leviathan, has been tamed over the years. But when the theremin creeps in and wraps around the haunted scrape of “Bedazzled Fingernails,” there’s no question about it; The Hunter is Mastodon’s most accomplished album to date.
