Alex Cooley takes on Eddie's Attic

Godfather of Atlanta concert promotions, Alex Cooley, and business partner Dave Mattingly have announced that they've purchased Decatur acoustic music bastion Eddie's Attic from current owner Bob Ephlin.

Cooley is responsible for the first and second Atlanta International Pop Festivals in 1969 and '70. He and Peter Conlon co-created the annual Music Midtown in 1995, which ran until '05 and was revived by Conlon this year. He also established the Electric Ballroom, the Capri Ballroom, the Buckhead Theatre and has worked with several other venues in Atlanta.

The Decatur music room that has been responsible for launching the careers of several singer/songwriters (John Mayer, Shawn Mullins, Caroline Aiken) is now changing hands for the fourth time. Eddie's Attic was founded in 1992 by Eddie Owen who sold the venue to Todd Van Sickle in 2002. Bob Ephlin took control in 2005, spending six and a half years at Eddie's Attic.

Throughout the changes in ownership, however, Owen has been responsible for booking the musical talent. That is, until early this October when he left to become manager at Duluth's Red Clay Theatre. He has already booked his first few shows to launch "Eddie Owen Presents" including Edwin McCain, Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, and Darrell Scott.

In this morning's press release Ephlin issued the following statement:

"I'm grateful for the support and loyalty of our customers and the City of Decatur, and thankful for the many aspiring and accomplished songwriters and musicians that have graced our stage.

I'm confident that Alex and Dave will do a great job taking Eddie's Attic to the next level. I believe its best days are ahead of it, and I look forward to supporting its continued success as an advisor, loyal customer, and fan of performing songwriters."
