An accidental jazz odyssey hits ATL this weekend

You might have noticed that there’s a boatload of good jazz going on all over town this weekend. The reason? The Bear Creek Music Festival is happening at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park near Live Oaks, Fla., and although not all, but most roads that lead there come through here first. If only someone had been crafty enough to organize a miniature pit stop festival of our own this weekend. … Alas, many of these shows will most likely suffer because they’re so scattershot throughout different venues. Regardless, if you’ve got an ear for god jazz it’s going to be a pretty busy weekend.

Tonight (Thurs., Nov. 10), the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey from Tulsa, Okla., plays the first of a two-night stand at the 5 Spot. $15 at the door, or $20 for both nights. Tonight's show is also the after party for the Medeski, Martin and Wood show that's happening next door at Variety Playhouse. $25-$27.50. Doors for that open at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 8 p.m.

Little John Roberts and his band the Chronicle play a show over at 595 North tonight with Shaun Martin who’s joining Snarky Puppy on stage for an opening set. $20-$25. Show starts at 9 p.m.

On the funk end of the spectrum, Dumpstaphunk, Orgone, and Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band are playing Masquerade tonight at 8. It’s $16 for tonight's show but you can get a two-day pass for $22 that will get you into the New Mastersounds and Fox Street All Stars show at Masquerade on Fri., Nov. 11.

Trey Anastasio from Phish is playing at the Tabernacle on Friday. … I’m not sure if he counts, but he is, after all, playing the Bear Creek fest this weekend, too.

Breakestra hits the Basement on Sat., Nov. 12, and it’s definitely a high point of all this madness. Justin Aswell from Mr. Invisible and Noot ‘d Noot open. $10. 9 p.m.

And last but not least, on Monday Underground System Afrobeat is playing at 529 with J-Live, DJ Nervex, and DJ Mafioso. It’s free and the music kicks off around 9 p.m.

Did I miss anyone?
