Ex-Dirt vocalist/guitarist John Forbes returns with Tijuana Hercules

Accidents, Tijuana Hercules and Superpill play 529 tonight (Fri., Nov. 18) — Accidents finds 1/2 of ATL hardcore’s founding fathers Neon Christ reconvening to play loud, fast, car crash rock ‘n’ roll. Tijuana Hercules is a trio fronted by John Forbes of former Atlanta bands Dirt and Phantom 309 (and later of Chicago’s Mount Shasta) that cranks out abrasive, in-the-red post-punk dirges. … That description almost covers what he Forbes does, but also sells it a little short. It falls under the “post-punk” heading only because it doesn’t fit anywhere else. There’s a deranged, chest-pounding lurch going on underneath the din of junk percussion and Forbes hairball rattle and busted guitar that's being played so hard it could rip itself to pieces at any second. Rasp, irreverence and miasma are the key elements here — it’s music that’s all about the freedom of being an absolute mess, and it unfolds with the force of a freight train. Seriously, when these guys play live Forbes looks like his eyeballs are going to leap right out of his skull and land in your drink. Superpill opens with a cool garage-y kind of thing. Their drummer, Arthur Johnson, played in Athens' BBQ Killers several lifetimes ago. There’s a whole lot of history and a whole lot of energy on this stage here tonight.

... Until then, check out Tijuana Hercules' video for “Quicksand Passin’ Through.”

$5. 9 p.m. 529. 529 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-228-6769.
