We've given our new landlords plenty of shit for their taste in piped-in muzak music. But here's a bright spot.
Tomorrow night Citizen Cope headlines Atlantic Station's free Winter Wonder Jam series with a 7:30 p.m. performance in Central Park. While his stage name has always evoked the same bluesy everyman character personified in his songwriting, it's his birth name — Clarence Greenwood — that damn near preordained dude for the role of modern-day country soul journeyman.
Despite spending time on major labels such as Capitol, Arista, and RCA, Cope, now independent, has flown just beneath the commercial radar for most of his career. But that hasn't kept him from garnering a cult following of sorts with his heartfelt mashup of soul, rock, and pickup-truck blues. He's the kind of storyteller that makes you wanna drink and think and hump something. Just try not to do all three at Atlantic Station. They don't have the right kind of grass for all that.
