Just when you thought it was safe to write off Atlanta hip-hop, along comes rapper Stan “Steam” Smith.

Smith, a New York native signed to Tokyo Dawn Records who snagged a 12-inch version of “Rapper’s Delight” when it was released in 1979, is being billed as “the oldest new jack to the longest running fad.”

But while this cat is not a fresh-faced youngster, the music on his debut album The Get Up Movement — created with the direction of Atlanta-based production wizard Daz-I-Kue and the German duo Soulparlor, among others — is truly funky fresh, mixing old-school MCing with broken beat, soul, bass and more.

Trust me: This dude is definitely one to watch in 2012. Take a listen for yourself: The Get Up Movement.
