Olivia Tremor Control return with hints of a new album

Posted by Chad Radford on Fri, Jan 6, 2012 at 11:04 AM

The Olivia Tremor Control left an indelible psychedelic footprint on Athens’ indie rock sound of the early ’90s, by mixing ’60s pop inclinations with swirling and hallucinogenic collages of Dada-esque noise. It was a sound the likes of which the Classic City had never seen or heard before, and by establishing the Elephant 6 collective, OTC’s members spearheaded an experimental pop legacy that germinated in dozens of bands, including singer/guitarist Jeff Mangum’s most acclaimed venture, Neutral Milk Hotel.

Now, after reissuing their seminal Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist Castle and Black Foliage: Animation Music LPs via Chunklet, OTC returns to the stage. Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart are joined by Derek Almstead, John Fernandes, Scott Spillane, Peter Erchick and AJ Griffin, each swapping an arsenal of instruments including: guitars (acoustic, electric, prepared, Nashville string), bass, drums, keys, horns (trumpet, euphonium, sousaphone), various sound effects (cassette tapes, samples, etc.), kazoos (of course), violin, clarinet, bass clarinet, recorders, toys, percussion (real and imagined), and of course, vocals.

Rumor has it that for the set at the Earl on Sat., Jan. 7 they'll be playing a massive swath of pretty much everything from throughout the group's entire career, and they’re throwing in a couple of brand new songs as well. According to Doss, the Olivia Tremor Control is currently working on a new album and they’re gonna play some of the newer numbers to see how well they go over live.

For now, it's a little too early to start talking about release date, title, or any of the other details, but the goal is to have the record finished and released this year. Keep your fingers crossed!

... And in case you missed it, check out this live set that OTC recorded for WFMU back in September. They come in around the 1:02:25 mark.

$12 (adv). $15 (door). Sat., Jan. 7 with Scott E. Spillane EXP opens the show. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950.
