When we checked in with Jack Preston a year ago, he was busy trying to find the nastiest chords on his newly acquired accordion. In recent months, the prolific hip-hop renaissance man has been in the studio cooking up all types of funk, but he's coming out of hibernation tonight, along with his band Dojo Collective, to stir it up at the new performance space, Space2, adjacent to the Sound Table. They'll be mixing their live instrumentation with a DJ set for a few songs, in addition to special guest features from MCs Sa-Roc, Ekundayo, Mike Flo, Preston Banks, and BLK CTX.
Beyond that, Preston's plate remains full as he simultaneously puts the finishing touches on a few albums, taking care to make sure he "craft[s] them in a way that will turn a few heads," he said today via text. "Once I finish the Dojo Collective record, I'm about to flood Atlanta with the Funk." And yes, he capitalized the "F" in funk, so I'd say the man is serious.
With Sa-Roc, Ekundayo, Mike Flo, Preston Banks, BLK CTX. Free. 10 p.m. Thurs., Jan. 12. Space2, 483 Edgewood Blvd. (next door to the Sound Table)
