The second leak from the A3C mixtape Beatz + Lyrics 2 Go features New York native/Atlanta resident Sha Stimuli lyrically going in over a track produced by Dr. Dre protegee Focus. For an MC who's endured criticism over his beat selection on past projects, the pairing is significant. In an interview on the making of "The Calling," he talks about what it was like to work with a producer who gave him direction on his delivery while recording in the vocal booth.
When I walked through the UniqueSquared Mobile Studio bus at A3C last year, shortly before Big Daddy Kane shut the festival down, Stimuli was actually laying down his vocals. If I recall correctly, it only took him two takes to perfect the flow.
His latest album is also called The Calling (rated a 3.5 out of 5 by HipHopDX.com), and in this song he airs out one of the album's recurring themes: his inner struggle to pay heed to his "calling" as an MC. It's real considering the ups-and-downs he's experienced in his career, from free agent to major-label signee to free agent again.
But as he said in last year's feature on New York's hip-hop's shifting identity — "Where you at, son?" — the move from NY to Atlanta has definitely helped him to put his career aspirations in proper perspective:
"When I'm in New York, I'm hood-famous," he says, referring to the constant queries he gets from supporters on the streets asking about his next mixtape, club date, career move. "That starts to weigh on your brain. Out here, I'm more settled, not [just] existing, but I'm living life. And that life goes into the music. Sometimes you have to live in order to create, instead of just creating and trying to get hot, because then you ain't saying nothing."
