Patterson Hood, John Bell, others rock against Walmart

Posted by Gabe Vodicka on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Above, check out a video for "After it's Gone," a song written by Drive-By Truckers frontman Patterson Hood and featuring a group called the Downtown 13 - a crew that includes other Athens luminaries like Mike Mills of R.E.M. and Widespread Panic's John Bell. The song, linked to a group called Protect Downtown Athens, is a response to a proposed development by Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises that would see a brand new Walmart erected on downtown Athens' scenic eastern edge. Unsurprisingly, the plan has provoked widespread criticism among Athens' art and music scenes.

The song, like much of Hood's music, is sorta clunky and obvious but also kind of endearing, and it features a few true gems: "And if it all disappears/Like it does in my fears/Nothing unique to be found/In a strip mall town."
