Watch Whitney Houston's 1985 debut on 'The Tonight Show'

It will probably be weeks before the cause of former Atlantan Whitney Houston's premature death at age 48, just hours before Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy Awards party at the same Beverly Hilton Hotel, can be revealed. But while the speculation persists, here's a moment worth reliving.

Still fresh under the tutelage of Arista Records' founder Clive Davis, she made her first appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" in April of 1985 to sing "You Give Good Love," the first single from her debut self-titled album.

Even at the age of 21, she was already every bit of the pop diva and powerhouse vocalist she would remain for years to come. Despite initial slow sales, the album Whitney Houston is one of the best-selling albums of all time with over 25 million copies sold.

Whitney was an amazing songstress in spite of her struggles. She went much too soon.
