Remember that Elmyr ad that Newmerica Media made last year? The one in which Brent Hinds from Mastodon finds the cure for his overwhelming hunger pains, or O.H.P.? Well, it won a Gold ADDY award, so congratulations are in order.
What’s a Gold ADDY? An ADDY is sort of like a Grammy, but for ads that are awarded on local, regional, and national levels. Newmerica’s Golden ADDY was awarded by the Atlanta Ad Club (formerly known as Creativity Atlanta) on the local level at the annual dinner and awards ceremony on Feb. 16.
A panel of ad executives judged more than 250 entries and awarded 23 Gold ADDY awards, as well as 77 silver ADDYs. They gave out some bronze, too. Other winners included Clear Channel, Moxie, Olympus Media, and dozens of others who are now competing on the regional level. After that it's on to the nationals.
“We were invited to attend the ceremony because our company was being recognized for our work, and we expected to get a bronze award," says Bryan Bankovich, who runs Newmerica with Dennis Mora, Ian Cone, Ashton Grosz, and Patrick Copeland. "During the ceremony Dennis and I looked at each other and said, ‘I don't think we're going to win because we're up against higher-profile agencies.' Then they called our name and we were like, 'Holy shit! Awesome! A room full of the 300 people that we want to see our work are going to see it!' Then the video player malfunctioned, and nobody saw it. Back to the dish room, I guess."
In honor of their win, here's a video mixtape of sorts: Five of Newmerica's greatest hits (that aren't the Elmyr pharmaceutical ad).

"We did this one back in like 1999, when we first got video editing software. These little kids on our block said, 'Hey, we have an idea for a movie, called Broke Piece of Doo-Doo Lizard.' So we said, 'Let's do it, dudes!' We started filming and these little kids just started talking shit to us and each other. It was amazing." — Bryan Bankovich, Newmerica.
