Music news Isness releases new/old single, 'Creepeth'

Give a listen to the live recording of the show from 529 made back in June of 2010 — the group's second show ever — and it’s there, hiding under the guise of “Kreap In,” albeit in a much more primitive state.
This reworked version comes together like a dark outtake from some forgotten Gorillaz' album, as bits of dub and pop surrealism gel to form a solid instrumental groove. It’s dark, but propelled by a stylistically upbeat tempo, which is kind of the secret to what makes Isness’ songs work.
By comparison, the original version was just a shell of what the song has become, as it’s minimalist qualities have thickened up under dense hooks, and a grumbling bass line that implies a sludged-out ambiance, but things never get too dirty here. It’s a world of difference from the song's origin, and while it isn't right to peg something with so many working parts as “minimalist” construct, there’s never a wasted note here, and it's one of the group's most revealing single shots yet.
Isness plays the Earl on Mon., May 21 with Zechs Marquise, and Odist. $8. 9 p.m.
