W.I.C. feat. Elijah Jones get gross with 'My Cologne'

The glaring design flaw that has tainted the Constellations’ presence and musical aesthetic from the beginning is the cartoonish arrogance that singer Elijah Jones’ voice embodies in pretty much everything the group has churned out. It came to a grotesque peak in such songs as “Felicia” and “Step Right Up,” from the Constellations’s proper debut, Southern Gothic (there's a new album, Do It For Free, out June 12), and now it has infected W.I.C.

Sure, Trip Freeman and Kory Calico write an awful lot about their exploits with women, on their own accord. But their lyrical style has always carried an unmistakable sense of refinement — they keep things subtle if not classy, even in the midst of full-on locker room talk. It's one of their more endearing qualities. “My Cologne” (or as the Bandcamp page has it listed, “Pussy My Cologne”), however, is a clear step down from their typically smooth and inventive word plays.

The song is funky to be sure, and the W.I.C. guys are rapping in top form. But a song that's so blatantly sleazy is out of character for them. Not for Jones, though. Perhaps in a packed-out club setting, where things like inhibition and acumen give-way to crunk ambiance and mob psychology, “My Cologne” could get people moving. But staring at this computer screen, bumping the song through a pair of headphones, it’s pretty gross.
