River City Extension released their third folk album, Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Your Anger, yesterday. Front man and lead songwriter, Joe Michelini, recently remarked that "Half of this record is love songs, and the other half is 'I'm sorry that I fucked up' songs." CL in return asked for his top 'sorry I screwed up' songs.

1) Ninth Avenue Reverie by The Middle East

This is a song about a person who he loved, and who loved him, but they regrettably have these issues that keep them from being together. The song leads up to this woman's death at the end of it, and he sings "You say you can't stop dreaming about your funeral day/where all your long-time friends will be crying for you/I'd be up the back with a rose in my hand/and I'd give to you in death what I could not in life". I thought that was a very, very sad way to say "I'm sorry" to someone. It's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.

2) Skeleton Key by Margot and the Nuclear So and So's

That song is like a "I'm not very sorry, but I did fuck up" song. They sing about very dark things really often but they make light of them in a sick way, and that song is really really sick. He sings about this woman who did nothing but good for him, and then he sings about leaving her.

3) Shame by The Avett Brothers

Shame's such an "I'm sorry" song. If you understand the Avett Brothers you understand how forward they can be with the emotions they're trying to relate.
