Just the other day someone asked me, “When was the last time that Public Enemy released a really dynamic single?” The answer: Just the other day.

?
During last week’s podcast, DJ Premiere snuck in a spin of “Get It In,” the first leak from the two albums that PE has set to drop this year in honor of the group’s 25th anniversary. The first album, Most of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear on No Stamp is due out July 4th, while The Evil Empire of Everything will see a Sept. 4th release. The albums are said to include appearances from a slew of people, including Henry Rollins, DMC, Large Professor, Brother Ali, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, and more - so we’re batting about 500 in the guests department.

?
But if “Get It In” is any indication of what Chuck, Flava, Griff, DJ Lord, the S1Ws, and the rest of the “banned” have up their sleeve, it’s going to be a good year for Public Enemy.

?
“Get It In” glides along with a smooth and glassy boom that’s part ode to the group’s early ’90s stride, circa Apocalypse ‘91... The Enemy Strikes Black, wrapped in a sophisticated collage of rhythms and funk from the here and now. Rather than breaking new ground, the song churns up the political tension, while adding a touch of refinement to the dark energy that has long defined Public Enemy.

?
Not a bad teaser for the group’s silver anniversary.

?
There’s a new single slated for release this Fri., June 15, but in the meantime, here’s “Get It In”
