This is weird on so many levels. But fun weird!
In fact, we couldn't have imagined a better video for Zac Brown Band if we'd directed it ourselves. Honestly, it almost seems like the new video for "The Wind" - animated by "King of the Hill" creator Mike Judge - was partly inspired by Gabe Vodicka's "haterade" blurb in our recent Hatelanta Music Issue. You know, the issue in which CL named Zac Brown Band Atlanta's No. 5 Most Hated Band.
The video, in which Zac Brown is transformed into "Robo Redneck," pokes fun at just about every stereotype thrown at the Georgia band. They chug beer. They throw axes. They chug beer. They mud truck. They chug beer. They make moonshine. And in the end, they turn Zac Brown into "the Six Million Dollar Honky."
Kind of ironic considering one of the band's professional handlers was less than pleased with CL throwing jabs at the band over "decidedly unprofound themes like drinking beer and eating fried chicken and pecan pie - you know, the kind of lyrics that really help the South shed its backward, backwoods image..." It almost kept us from scoring the interview with Brown that resulted in the following week's cover story in which writer Steve LaBate painted a sober portrait of ZBB's local, dues-paying roots - while also getting Brown to address their decidedly mainstream leanings.
So yeah, it's nice to see Zac Brown Band has a sense of humor about itself. Guess you could say we're in on the joke, too.
