After experiencing a series of top-10 chart hits and multiplatinum success with ’90s girl group Xscape, vocalist LaTocha Scott has joined the recent foray of older school R&B singers revamping their catalog with new releases.
Lifted from her forthcoming Truth N' the Booth mixtape, the Wale-assisted "Complicated" is a silky, mid-tempo retelling of a soured relationship. Produced by DJ Toomp — the mastermind behind Yeezy's "Can't Tell Me Nothing" and T.I.'s "What You Know" — and written by expert lyricists Chef Tone and Lundon, "Complicated" fronts a well-engineered attempt to capture a younger generation.
But "Complicated" also marks a grave diversion from Scott's glory days with Xscape. Far from the groovy, convertible-friendly "Just Kickin' It" or the So So Def smash "Who Can I Run To," "Complicated" instead finds Scott stuck in R&B purgatory, somewhere between the heavenly vocals of Toni Braxton's Pulse and the hellish pits of Teairra Marie's disposable collection. It's not the best place for someone of Scott's prominence, but it beats total obscurity.
