For the Owls’ side, the group has tightened up “Cocaine Super Demon,” which has been floating around the Internet for a minute. Here, the touch-ups are subtle but they give the song’s teeth and claws a sharpening job to slice through the sludge for a pretty badass groove that’s both vicious and hypnotic.
On the flipside, Spirits’ “Look” is a previously unreleased number that is the hypnotic yin to Order of the Owl’s yang. The song takes shape as a soft, spacious communion with the stars, and it’s a preview of things to come with the group’s next full-length which is currently under construction. Rarely are split singles as finely balanced as this.
Order of the Owl and Spirits play a 7-inch release party on Sat., Aug 4 at 529 with Nigredo. $7. 9 p.m.
