The N.E.C., 'N.O.W.'

This week, the N.E.C. has given us a single from their third album, Last Point of Radiation, which arrives Sat., Aug. 4. The song is called “N.O.W.,” and when I asked if it stands for anything, singer/guitarist Cyrus Shahmir simply replied, “Not Important,” which makes it all the more baiting.

“N.O.W.” is the sixth song on the album, and it feels like a logical next step following their last album, Pineapple — specifically it’s a natural bridge from the prior album’s grand finale, “Loralene,” which took shape as a pretty huge jam explosion from a handful of guys who’ve come into their own in terms of spontaneous group improv chemistry. With “N.O.W.” we hear the efforts of said group developing together further as they pour their strengths into a song they’ve written together.

The N.E.C., Soft Opening, Abby Go Go, and Women's Work play the Earl, Sat. Aug. 4. $7. 9 p.m.

Also, if you’re torn between this album release show and the Spirits/Order of the Owl 7-inch release show going on down the street at 529, word is that you can by a $10 pass to both shows at the door either club.
