One of the good things about checking out older bands (if you’re a working stiff like myself, at least) is they tend to go on sooner, do the damn thing, and get you home early enough to avoid hitting the snooze button a dozen times the next morning. Headliners Sublime with Rome hit the stage before 9:30 p.m. last night after two strong sets by openers Pepper and Cypress Hill. But lesson learned, it’s not exactly 1992 anymore.
Slated to perform in the Masquerade Music Park, an outdoor space that holds about 4,000 folks, the show was shifted into the venue’s “heaven” space due to slack ticket sales. But heaven was slammed packed, a sold out show with a 1,000 person max.
Both Cypress Hill and Sublime with Rome cranked through the decades old tunes that made the bands household names, and slipped in a few new ones for the road, but their sets were worlds apart.
Through a dense and smokey haze Cypress Hill rallied the crowd around their THC-laced lyrical stylings (have you met Dr. Green Thumb? Did you know B-Real owns the world’s biggest bong?).
While Sublime with Rome sounded great, the group lacked the energy you’d hope for from a band that most of us grew up cranking on the dual-cassette boom box. Rome Ramirez, the singer dude that replaced the late Bradley Nowell in 2009, was the most active of the bunch, doing his best to carry the live experience. And at age 24, about two decades younger than the rest of the original Sublime-ers, he's got the energy to burn.
