Tonight West Coast doom pioneers Saint Vitus dominate a stacked Tuesday night

It’s another one of those Tuesday nights in Atlanta where there are just too many choices to be made, and if checking out music is on your agenda the options run far and wide.
First and foremost, Saint Vitus is playing the Masquerade, and even typing the name here provokes a mildly Pavlovian response in me, dredging up memories of scouring through pages of Thrasher Magazine as an angst-ridden teenager, marveling at just how badass those ads made albums like Born Too Late, Mournful Cries, and V look back in the late ’80s/early ’90s. Although highly underappreciated in their prime, Saint Vitus is/was a West Coast doom metal pioneer and it’s not every day that a band of such stature rolls through Atlanta. If you’ve listened to that killer live album (recorded in 1990) that Southern Lord released several years back, you know exactly what this group is capable of pulling off tonight — so many years after calling it quits in 1995.
The group's latest release, Lillie: F-65, is a concept album that's either about a problem child or a barbiturate — it's all in the ear of the beholder, I guess. Either way, the album doesn’t necessarily reinvent the group's sound as much as it reconstitutes the original doom and fog metal traipse that made Saint Vitus a glacial force of nature in the Reagan era.
Regardless, this show is not to be missed. Weedeater, Sourvein, and Order of the Owl open, and if you missed the 12-inch release party for the Owl’s latest seven-song offering over the weekend, here’s your chance to catch an encore performance. Doors open at 7 p.m. Order of the Owl will most likely get started around 7:30 p.m.
Of course, if taking in some classic doom metal isn’t your thing, any one of these shows are worthy of your time and attention as well, particularly that show at the Goat Farm with Ty Segall et al.
