Okay, so even by the gnarliest of punk rock standards, Pussy Riot’s songs are pretty raw, but let’s not get hung up on that. Through their actions, the women of Pussy Riot have shed light on some disturbing trends in round two of Vladimir Putin's reign, stirring up some much-needed debate on the direction of Russia, particularly when it comes to human rights and freedom of expression. Their prison sentence also illuminates the dangers of mixing church and state affairs, and with religious sensitivity on the rise (see the Innocence of Muslims outrage), a discussion of the Pussy Riot trial seems especially pertinent.
Tonight, Emory University's Student Slavic Club is hosting a roundtable discussion titled, "Hooligans or Revolutionaries: Pussy Riot in Russian Context.” Come out and exercise free speech, along with some free pizza.
Free and open to the public. 5:30 p.m. Modern Language Bldg., 201.
