DJ Drama's 'Quality Street Music' misses its mark

DJ Drama's Quality Street Music (eOne Music) has had the streets buzzing with anticipation for quite some time. But with a slew of predictable features and some unexpected verses from artists including Common, Planet VI, Schoolboy Q, and more, Quality Street Music doesn't sound that much like a "street" album.

A lot of tracks ("Clouds," "Monique's Room") sound like street ballads, with mushy R&B hooks, rather than the gritty beats and lyrics that are so often associated with street anthems. Despite that, potential club bangers like "Real N****s In the Building" and "So Many Girls” make the album bearable. The disc’s opening number, "Goin Down," sets the tone for the rest of the album to follow, but shortly after that Quality Street Music loses its way. Kevin Hart’s “Chocolate Droppa” comedy skit brought more of a street vibe than anything else on the album.

In the end, DJ Drama needs go back to the drawing board, revisit some of his previous Gangster Grillz tapes, and study the blueprint of what makes street music. With Quality Street Music he was so wrapped up in not making the album sound like another mixtape that it didn't live up to its name.
