Dark Room unveils 'Canopy View' EP

Dark_Room.jpg

Dark Room (aka Graham Yoder of Jungol) recently released a new four-song EP via Primitive Patterns titled Canopy View. This time around Yoder has upped the volume on his repertoire in some abstract ways, placing guitar loops up front and center, while drawing out a cleaner and more straightforward sound than what we’ve come to expect from this side of his output. In other words, the effects are here, but throughout such songs as “Goodbye” and “Hide n Seek” he allows the warm, natural tones of the instruments to stand out, resulting in a soft-focus, and generally easy-on-the-brain vibe.

There’s a fair amount of vocal sampling and deconstruction going on here as well, and while it culminates in some rich sonic textures, he uses the tweaked-out and disembodied voices he’s wrangled to serve as a serial element, resulting in new melodies that are both hyper and heady — good music for defragmenting your thoughts.

These four songs will also appear in a film project that Jungol is currently working on in the studio, titled Go Softly. According to Yoder, the film will be released in pieces, and will include music from a forthcoming Jungol album, and some new solo offerings from both Graham and his brother Josh as well.

In the meantime, catch Dark Room on Friday, October 26 at 529 with Qurious and Hundred Waters. $10. 9 p.m.
