The whole reason this exists is to give me a reason to play my guitar. The people with a sense of humor get it and those who don't - the humor's not necessarily for them anyway. You can't argue with someone that has no sense of humor.
I understand you took Robert McKee's famous screenwriting course. How much was it like what's represented in Adaptation?
It was identical. Exactly. That was great for people who give a shit about writing to see that seminar because he does say a lot of bright and helpful things, and Brian Cox did a pretty spot-on impression of him. As stupid as our show may be, you do have to have some story chops to get through an episode. As I continue doing this show I want to make sure that I don't rely on the same stuff and that I can hopefully do some things that are surprising to myself and my audience.
It's a pretty subversive, anti-commercial show for television.
Well, Adult Swim has a lot of stuff that's along that line. That's their whole niche, but it is nice to be able to have your cake and eat it too - to have a TV show and also be anti-commercial. It's the loophole everyone's been looking for. But it's funny because there is murder and tits and guitars so it seems to test well demographically. And it always will.
What's the idea behind the Metalocalypse tour?
There's a whole new group of kids who don't really have that cool older brother to show them what metal is, so they start getting into metal because of the show. So when we go out on the road we go, "Here are some other cool bands that play metal, check them out."
You've got a video of the cartoon characters keyed to what you're playing. How does that work?
What we have is a click track running through the drummer's headset so my idea of a show is something that should feel like a big interactive thing that's built for the audience and is about the audience and - if I do my job right - it will feel like a big stupid Disneyland ride but with murder, tits, and jacking off.
That is the nature of the show. If you don't know what it is, just mentioning it. You will be educated very quickly if you wait around for 10 minutes.
Dethklok, All That Remains, Machine Head, and the Black Dahlia Murder play the Tabernacle on Saturday, December 8. $35.50. 6:30 p.m.

Their show with Chris, Lord about 3 years at the Unicorn was the best.
