Irreversible splits its sound in two with new EPs

On Thursday, December 20, Atlanta's reignited post-hardcore occultists Irreversible are releasing two EPs, Thorn and Plucked Up By the Root. Each of these new offerings is a headlong trip into the distinctly separate, but equal sides of the bands sound. Thorn tackles Irreversible's screaming, guitar-driven hardcore roots, while PUBTR focuses on the atmospheric side.

Jacob Franklin (guitar, bass, vocals, and production) explains this exercise in taking Irreversible apart to see what it's components are, and how they work ...

"The act of simultaneously making two distinct records, with different lineups has allowed us to perform a kind of "Solvé et Coagula" operation. Thorn is the highly technical, caustic analysis phase - meant to describe the various mental defects that plague certain people we've come in contact with. It feels disturbing to see consumerists, new-agers, and people of faith behave like livestock - hence the dark, aggressive edge. Thorn has its counterpart in the form of PUBTR, which Russ [Abbott] helped write, with Billy [Henis] driving most of the in-house production. This was a totally new writing style for us, where many genres are covered with many different instruments. This helps reassemble the pieces from Thorn in a more positive, cinematic light. The lyrical themes resonate with Thorn, but in a way that foreshadows our next full-length. The full-length will be a kind of multimedia Sci-Fi work, where we design a world for the same masochistic people described in Thorn, and provide them with everything they desire and deserve."

Check out "Black Cross Black Shield" from the Thorn EP.

Irreversible plays the Earl on Thurs., Dec. 20 with Manray and Dark Room. $8. 9 p.m. 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950.
