Artists to watch Mighty High Coup: '808' boom rappers look to a bright future

The most recent video for lauded dubstep producer Caspa's "On It," finds Atlanta hip-hop trio Mighty High Coup - Ricky Raw, Mr. SOS, and A-Bomb - partying in a black-lit living room, pouring a cereal bag full of weed into a bowl, followed by a drizzle of Olde English malt liquor. The video was filmed by the Atlanta-based video production team Motion Family, who's worked with the likes of Young Jeezy and B.o.B., among dozens of others, and it's the biggest break that Mighty High Coup has seen since Bassnectar repurposed their "808s" vocals for his own twisted "808 Track." That song reached the number 5 spot on iTunes' dance chart in October 2010, and appeared in a fourth season episode of AMC's meth-addled drama "Breaking Bad," titled "Bullet Points," garnering over a million YouTube views.
In the meantime, Mighty High Coup has gone on to release three full-length albums beginning with its 2010 self-titled debut, followed by Boom Rap a year later, and the group's most recent offering, Dark Side of the Boom, which arrived in August. Coupled with the December 10 release of Caspa's "On It" 12-inch, MHC has watched its trap-centric popularity rise above and beyond the hot boxed underground club circuit. "I've gotten hit up for more out-of-town shows in the last two weeks than any time in our career," boasts Ricky Raw.
While the year is quickly filling up with MHC shows dates around the country, Raw credits Atlanta's trap scene for bridging the gap that separates the worlds of free, underground hip-hop shows, and five-figure-paying gigs that make it possible for the group to turn a profit by playing live shows while continuing to release music for free. "The post-dubstep era has become all about trap music, which is similar to dubstep in the heavy bass, but it doesn't have as much of a screaming sense," he adds. "It's a little lighter and similar to the crazy drum work that you saw in Atlanta's rap and hip-hop of the late '90s and early 2000's."
Aside from the coming year's heavy touring schedule, Mighty High Coup has also made plans to head into the studio to record tracks with producers such as MUST DIE!, Bro Safari (aka DJ / producer Knick), and Mayhem (aka Edgewood). The group will also be featured on a track by dub step producer Taste Tester of Freakstep Recordings, which is run by blogger, producer, and film maker Adrian Sosebee, who produced all of MHC's videos prior to "On It." But they'll pair up again for a more video releases throughout the year.
In the meantime, they'll be on the road for a minute, but you know they'll be in town for the annual 404 day celebration (April 4), and the 808 Fest on August 8, which Raw kicked off in 2012 ... Bring your own cereal.
