Music news Josh Garrels' 'The Sea In Between' captures spiritual beauty through music and film

Spiritually driven singer/songwriter Josh Garrels may not have hit the commercial big time, but the Portland-based musician is ready to hit the big screen. He teamed up with Brooklyn's Mason Jar Music collective, shipped everyone including his wife and two toddlers out to Mayne Island, Vancouver, British Columbia, and recorded a dozen songs outdoors in unusual and lovely bucolic locales, all with the cameras rolling. The resulting film, The Sea In Between, plays at Center Stage on Fri., Feb 22, followed by a rare live performance from Garrels backed by a 10-piece ensemble sporting a flute, cello, accordion, banjo, and violin - recreating the movie's atmospheric vibe and other tunes from Garrels' body of work.
More than just a concert documentary, it's a portrait of the unassuming, sweet-voiced Garrels as a struggling independent artist, stay-at-home father, and restless auteur going to extremes to create art with the help of like-minded musicians. They explore the creative process together, transforming the singer's already-innovative folk/jazz/pop from his Love & War & The Sea In Between album with energy, enthusiasm, and a commitment seldom captured in front of cameras. The scenic locale and skillful camera work enhance the experience of a communal set of musicians crafting music that clearly inspires them as much as the audience.
