Yamin Semali unveils self-titled anthem

Posted By on Mon, Mar 18, 2013 at 5:25 PM

A video for the title track from Yamin Semali's debut album YAMIN arrived today. As a personal mantra, this one's all about knowing thyself. "At the core of the song, I use myself as an example of how someone who came from humble beginnings, or may not know exactly where they're supposed to be in life can still make things happen," Semali says. "Hip-hop has always been about bragging in the face of disparity, but it's not honest anymore. It's about bragging to the point of just telling lies about yourself. I wanted to reinterpret what hip-hop is about to me."

There are a handful of locals making cameos in the video: DT of Clan Destined, Illastrate, and Bboy Quick of the Funk Lordz are all here. ... And even though you don't see her, that's Lyric Jones singing backup.

Yamin Semali plays Terminal West on Friday, March 29 with Killer Mike and Skewby. $15. 9 p.m. 887 West Marietta, Studio C. 404-876-5566.
