Before taking the stage at the Star Bar tonight (Sat., April 6), playing his first show in six months (he thinks), Derek Lyn Plastic took a few minutes to talk about the band's new lineup, and what he has in store for the year to come.
When and how did the band form?
Derek Lyn Plastic formed in 2003. I was working at Nickel and Dime Studios in Atlanta, and recorded the first 7-inch with Kris Sampson after hours. After playing the record for a few different people and gaining a few fans here and there, it eventually was given the live treatment. Over the past decade I've played with a revolving cast of great musicians spanning the East Coast, while living in different cities: Atlanta, New York City, and Orlando, Fla. The current lineup includes some of the best musicians I have found during my time here in Atlanta.
What has the band released over the years?
So I've released somewhere around 10 different 7-inches, three full-length LPs, and multiple compilations and motion picture soundtracks. Some of the labels I've worked with include Florida Is Dying, Certified PR, FDHP, Trash, and my label NMG Worldwide, among a few others here and there. I've been around a long time compared to a lot of the bands you and I might consider my peers.
What is the band's current lineup?
Richard Henderson plays guitar, Veronica Sidwell plays bass, Dwain Flowers on drums, and me singing and playing guitar. We're hoping to fill a keyboard/guitar position if we can find the right person.
What do you have in store for 2013?
It's gonna be a great year! Right now I am very busy working on a handful of different records, and a movie too! First up, there's a one-sided 12-inch that will double as a movie soundtrack to a silent movie I am writing. The record will be out on Rockin' Bones from Italy (Persuaders, Briefs, Lost Sounds). After that I have a 7-inch that now is up for grabs. The label that originally asked for it did a great job of convincing me to start the record and then folded sometime last year. I'll send it out to a few other cool labels once the mixes get closer. I don't wanna mention any names and jinx myself. ... And finally, last but not least by any means whatsoever, I am putting together another 3-LP full-length/rock 'n' roll trilogy. I'm about 50 songs deep. ... My only goals are to get all the new records out and get this new lineup out on the road and playing some local shows too.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
That's a tough one. I didn't expect to live this long, so if I stay alive that will be an accomplishment in and of itself. Maybe I'll wish to do more interviews?

Well, this years Music Midtown sucks!
I'm pretty sure he was 19.
3 people apparently love handing over an extra 40% in fees for nothing in return…
Dang. I thought they would name some actual headliners.
Forgot to mention that Iggy did a stellar show @ the Agora in the spring…
