Released mid-2012, after more than a decade of forward-thinking sonic exploration, Jason Lescalleet’s Songs About Nothing captures the noise artist at the top of his game. The sprawling double-disc set, out on the Erstwhile Records imprint, initially seems like an exercise in electro-acoustic improvisation, but the material is actually the result of roughly 50 to 100 rewrites before its completion. The album surveys a stunning array of post-industrial drone, academic noise and synth patch work, and a form of modern classical that isn’t being attempted (at least successful) anywhere else.
