Night Beats bring psychedelic fuzz to 529

Night Beats is a guitar fuzz-driven psych-rock band from Seattle, capturing the drug fueled spirit of classic Texas bands like early Red Crayola, the Golden Dawn, and the 13th Floor Elevators, while still sounding fresh and vital. Although the group has been around since 2009 and has gotten recent exposure through a string of California dates in March opening for the Black Lips, the band is underrated considering how similar it sounds to some earlier material by the another group of former tourmates, the much hyped Black Angels. Speaking of recent exposure, tomorrow's show (Fri. May 3, at 529) comes on the heels of a higher-profile local appearance, opening for the Zombies at Variety Playhouse back in March. That show and the recent California tour were not guitarist and lead singer Danny Lee Blackwell's only exposure to Atlanta or the Black Lips, as he's also a member of Night Sun along with Cole Alexander and former Cee Lo Green backup singer Curtis Harding.

Night Beats, A. Grimes, and Mas Ysa play 529 tomorrow (Fri, May 3). 11 p.m. $7. 529 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-228-6769.
