This was the first Eyedrum show in its new temporary space in the downtown FUSE Arts Center (115 MLK), and it felt like a test run of sorts. It was also a reminder of just how much Atlanta's noise and avant-garde music scenes have needed a proper home base since Eyedrum closed the doors at its 290 MLK Drive space in 2010.
Among the opening acts on Saturday night, Magicicada performed as a two-piece, featuring Chris White and Danny Bailey (Faun and A Pan Flute). Here's a video of their show recorded by cell phone with audio from a mic placed in the center of the room (they're recording a proper session together later this week).
For those who are unfamiliar with the area, the new space can be a bit difficult to find. It's just around the corner from Underground Atlanta. If you're coming down Pryor St., hang a right on MLK and immediately duck into the parking garage on the right. It's only $3 to park, and it will save you from having to "drive around the block," which is never as easy as it sounds in Atlanta.
Once you're on the sidewalk, look for the green awning next to Perfume World, take the elevator to the second floor, turn right, and then turn right again. Once you're inside, it's a clean, comfortable loft space that could use some breaking in, but it's a perfectly suitable locale for Eyedrum's return.
If you missed the show on Saturday, there are plenty of other shows on the books this month leading up to the grand reopening on Fri., June 28.
