Swank Sinatra: 'When the Morning Comes'

Posted By on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 1:31 PM

And the award for the most obnoxious song, video, and band name of 2013 goes to: Swank Sinatra, "When the Morning Comes."

If you can make it past the first 10 seconds, watching the "When the Morning Comes" video is kind of like witnessing a car accident. It's hard to look away out of sheer disbelief that a video could simultaneously fail on so many fronts - humor, edginess, acting, songwriting, and the part where Bob Place is singing with water pouring on his head is exceptionally noteworthy. All in all, it misappropriates a lot of trademark '90s elements with its ramped up alt/aggro rocking sensibilities, what with the whole sword swallower guy and all. Even a band like Helmet understood the power of subtlety and nuance. If this song and video had been made 25 years ago it still would have stunk up the whole room; corny nods to West Side Story notwithstanding. File this one under "What were they thinking?"

If you want more, check out Swank Sinatra's album El Terrible - I know.

Swank Sinatra, R_Garcia, Andy the Doorbum, and I Want Whiskey play the Drunken Unicorn on Sat., July 13. $7. 9 p.m. 736 Ponce De Leon Ave.
