Is that why he sounds so familiar?
We kid CeeLo because we love CeeLo. And sure, throughout Age Against the Machine he sounds more akin to what he delivered with some of his solo numbers - more like what he sounded like on "The Voice." He's come a long way since the days of dropping gritty lines, like "You can get some gold, but we won't make it as a whole"/"You can smoke a pound of sess and it still won't relieve your stress, god bless" (in "Thought Process" from 1995's Soul Food). But that's cool. He's worked hard and earned every penny that he's made. However, the man has been involved in dozens of projects that are way cooler, and far more relevant than a damn reality TV singing competition.
Featuring CeeLo Green from:
... "The Dirty South"
... Gnarls Barkley
... the Superbowl
... Kung Fu Panda
... "the Brak Show"
... Freaknik: The Musical
... of Big Gipp, T-Mo, and Khujo fame!
... Anything but "The Voice"
If you haven't given it a listen yet, Age Against the Machine sports some jams. It's got some skippers too ("Ghost of Gloria Goodchild," "Amy"), but it's loaded with songs to please the CeeLo fans, and a few for the old-school Goodie Mob set as well. "Power," "I'm Set," "Kolors," and "Pinstripes" being the highlights of an album that's more concerned with making progress than it is with rekindling the glory days of the Dirty South.
Also, be sure to check out check out Rodney Carmichael's June 13 CL cover story, "Goodie Mob Against the Machine: The legendary group's first album in 14 years will definitely shock fans. But will it awe them as well?"
