Shlohmo headlines Halloween showcase at the Basement

West coast producer leads underground retreat of costumed electronic sounds

When it comes to Halloween venues in Atlanta, there is no after hours spot that’s more fitting than the Basement underneath EAV’s zombified Graveyard Tavern. The subterranean space will host a night of woozy and romantic electronic sounds with a packed bill that includes Shlohmo, XXYYXX, Taste Tester, and Fortune Howl.

Headliner Shlohmo, aka Henry Laufer, founding member of the Los Angeles-based Wedidit collective (Jonwayne, Groundislava, RL Grime, D33J), crafts a mix of futurist R&B that pulls in and re-purposes source samples from any given era or genre of music that suits his fancy. Soulful vocals lifted straight out of the ’60s are processed and slowed down or sped up to seamlessly fall in line with sampled string sections of stray recordings that accompany slow and smooth bass lines and ’90s hip-hop beats. The resulting sound is a haunted love letter to any number of sounds, be it retro soul, R&B, or hip-hop instrumentals. All costumes are welcome.

Shlohmo, XXYYXX, Taste Tester, and Fortune Howl. $15-$18. 9 p.m. The Basement, 1245 Glenwood Ave SE. 404-662-8686.
