Although Bear Kids Records has been around since 2010, the Decatur-based indie label has big plans to ramp up its presence and focus on cassette tapes. Having largely existed as a means to release CDs and hyper-limited tapes of music by label-owner and -operator Justin Green (Black Spots and Mountain Party), the label is no stranger to the portable mini reel-to-reel format. But Green hopes to play up the cassette format’s aesthetic possibilities and the affordability both for the label and its audience, following in the footsteps of like-minded tape labels around the U.S., with Green calling out specific institutions like Orchid Tapes, Godmode, Tranquility Tapes, Birdtapes, Fleeting Youth, and Burger Records. The first fruit of Bear Kids’ relaunch comes in the form of Greenville cellist and songstress Sarah Clanton Schaffer’s debut entitled Chasin’ a Feeling, a downplayed meandering through fields of pop, balladry and Americana. With hints at three short-run reissues and editions of Atlanta-based artists’ upcoming albums on tape, Bear Kids has big plans for staking its claim in Atlanta’s tape scene.
